Can you believe it's already time to start thinking about the upcoming school year.

One of the best ways parents can prepare is to understand your highly intuitive child's primary style of learning and adapt around their strengths.

This summer we had our middle schooler take the Myers-Briggs assessment and it confirmed a lot about his personality and primary learning style. He is an intuitive learner. The details of the assessment were eye opening and very helpful to know as we prepare to go back to school.

Highly intuitive kids are intuitive learners. Their dominant trait of high intuition shapes how they think, learn, and perceive the world.

Based on my research, I've found most school curricula are not set up to support this type of primary learning style. Our education system is designed to support linear thinking and learning based on what can be experienced with the five senses. However, children with an intuitive learning style are big picture thinkers who can make intuitive leaps in their thought process to come up with answers, ideas, and conclusions. Their strengths include being dreamers, discoverers, and dynamos who think big picture while sometimes skipping over or leaving out details and leaving unfinished tasks.

What does this mean?

They are young visionaries, innovators, and thought leaders who need our encouragement and support. These kids think and learn differently than their linear thinking peers and educational system. When arriving at their quick, creative, big picture conclusions--which may or may not be correct, intuitive learners often have to wait for the rest of class to catch up to their thought process. They can sometimes find going over details tedious and boring, so this leaves the door open for them to lose focus, get off task, and begin daydreaming in class. With their big picture focus, these intuitive learners can leave teachers wanting and asking for more details in their work.

If a man (or woman) does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however, measured or far away. ~Henry David Thoreau

This tendency to daydream and get lost in their own big picture thoughts can lead to some of these children being mistakenly labeled with attention deficit (ADD or ADHD) issues when it’s actually a learning style issue.

When the learning environment for an intuitive learner is adjusted to engage and support their way of thinking and learning, the ADD like symptoms go away.

Educate Yourself

I recommend parents educate yourself about your child’s personality traits and primary learning style. Understanding how he or she thinks and interacts with the world will help you provide better support to your highly intuitive kid at home and to advocate for the best situation at their school.

Sometimes it may even be necessary to change teachers or schools to provide a better support system and learning environment for your child.

Below is a free Myers-Briggs Assessment. It's the one linked on our website. This tool can be used with middle and high school students. This is one resource, however, there are many free Myers-Briggs assessments available on the internet. Do your research and decide which one works best for you.

Also, check out these books. They are listed in the Resources section on our website and can be purchased at Amazon.com.

We hope you found this information helpful. Our goal is to provide parents, educators, and other professionals with information and tools to better understand and support our highly intuitive kids so they can thrive in all environments.
